Spring Family Portraits – What to Wear

Spring is almost here, a great time to get those family spring photos. The snow is gone the grass is changing to a bright green and those early spring perennials are breaking through the warm soil.

What should you do to get ready for those spring photos. There are 5 key thinks to consider when planning for family photos.  Being here in Northeast Wisconsin has an impact, but with a few tweaks will make these 5 key items work at any location.

First, Color, Color, Color

There are so many choices when considering a color pallet for spring portraits.  You can mix and match colors but strive to keep it in two to four only, a few similar colors when shooting large families draws the eye in when viewing the portrait.  You can mix and match with patterns within the color pallet but be careful not to overdo the variety of patterns. Second, Coordinate but don’t match

Consider complementary colors and even variations within the same color.  When considering family portraits consider what will look good on the walls of your home.

Third, textures and layers

Be sure to have some layers, texture, dimension in your pictures!  Layer your son with a t-shirt and a denim button down over it, your daughter to have a belt that adds a pop of color. Spring is harder to layer because we are always so ready for cooler/summer-y type clothes but throwing some layers in there provides the texture.  Think hats for boys, a light airy scarf for girls, leggings with a ruffled skirt, necklaces…think layers!

Forth, Accessorize

Pick out accessories to add texture to your photos. Accessories are great style pieces that add to your individual outfits and can even tie family members’ outfits together. For example, if Dad is wearing a red and black plaid coat then adding a plaid hat to your daughter’s outfit will tie the pattern in for a more cohesive feel. Accessories will also give your photos variation. Think scarves, hats, gloves and belts.

Fifth, Enjoy the weather and have fun
